Most visitors to Tuscany see the famous Val d’Orcia during the day. Some stay for sunset. But the real magic happens before sunrise.
The Secret Morning Ritual
On our Tuscany Photo Tour, one day begins very differently. At 4:00 in the morning, our small group quietly slips out of our charming hotel in Pienza.
The hallways are silent. We walk almost on stocking feet so we don’t disturb the other guests. It feels a little like a secret mission. Within minutes we’re driving through the dark countryside toward a location we carefully scouted the day before.
When we arrive, it’s completely dark. Tripods come out. Headlamps glow softly. Cameras are being set up.
For now, we can barely see anything. But we know exactly what might be coming and what we’re hoping for.
Waiting for the Landscape to Reveal Itself
Very slowly the darkness begins to fade. First, faint outlines appear in the distance. Then we see it — the iconic farmhouse Il Belvedere, our star/hero, the element we focus on in our compositions this the morning.
Because we arrived early, we’ve secured the best tripod positions. We’re not the only photographers who love this place, but we’ve learned over the years that timing matters. Hence the 4 am departure.
Then something extraordinary happens. Mist begins to drift through the valley below us. Farmhouses appear and disappear like small islands floating in a sea of fog. Rows of cypress trees emerge from the mist. Soft light slowly brushes across the hills.
For a brief moment the entire landscape looks almost unreal. And it lasts only about 20 minutes.
Then the sun rises, the fog disappears, and the magic is gone. (Not that the Il Belvedere farmhouse isn’t a stunning photographic scene mid-day.)

Morning fog in the Val d’Orcia only happens under certain conditions. You can’t schedule it. You can’t guarantee it. But when it happens, the results are unforgettable.
