Sydney’s Discobolus Monument Added to NSW State Heritage Register

The iconic Discobolus Monument at Stockroute Park, Sydney Olympic Park (Homebush Bay), has been officially listed on the NSW State Heritage Register, ensuring permanent protection for one of Australia’s most striking tributes to the ancient Greek origins of the Olympic Games.

Created by renowned Australian artist Robert Owen for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the monumental steel discus stands seven metres in diameter. Its central section is crafted from armour-plated glass etched with the dynamic silhouette of a discus thrower, echoing the famous ancient Greek sculpture Discobolus by Myron.

Surrounding the towering discus, marble monuments are scattered throughout the park, celebrating the enduring spirit of Hellenism and the significant contribution of Greek Australians. Cypress pines, olive trees, and native Australian eucalyptus weave a symbolic bridge between Greece – the birthplace of the Olympics – and modern Australia.

NSW Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism, Mark Coure MP, hailed the heritage listing as a landmark victory for community-driven cultural recognition.

The listing mandates that the Discobolus Monument and its associated moveable heritage elements remain retained and maintained within the park.
