Preserving language and heritage: The 52-year legacy of Nestoras College

For more than half a century, Nestoras College has been a beacon of Greek language and cultural education in Melbourne. Founded in 1975 by two dedicated teachers from Greece, the College was built on a profound vision: to provide a nurturing environment where students could embrace their Greek language, identity, and cultural heritage. Today, that vision continues to flourish, shaping the lives of countless students.

Nestoras College has grown significantly since its establishment, now offering Greek language tuition at three campuses—Thornbury High School, Doncaster Secondary College, and Thomastown Secondary College. Catering to students from 4-year-old Kinder through to VCE Year 12, the College empowers students to cultivate linguistic skills and deepen their knowledge of Greek heritage. With a curriculum enriched by Greek dance, music, and theatre, students are immersed in the richness of Hellenic culture, fostering a deep connection to their roots.

The College’s program adheres to the Victorian Curriculum standards, providing a comprehensive program from Prep/Foundation to Year 10 and VCE accreditation for Years 11 and 12. Over the last 52 years, Nestoras College has consistently achieved outstanding results, reflecting the dedication and expertise of its teaching staff.

Subjects such as ancient, modern, and Byzantine history, as well as Greek mythology, provide students with a profound understanding of Hellenic culture, ensuring the continuation of this rich legacy.

All staff are certified in First Aid, Anaphylaxis, and Asthma training, ensuring a safe, supportive, and caring learning environment.

To further support students, the College provides free textbooks—many of which are internally developed to meet specific learning needs. In addition, VCE workshops are offered during term holidays at no extra cost, helping students prepare confidently for their assessments.
