Major upgrade transforms Greece’s National Archaeological Museum experience

A sweeping modernisation of the National Archaeological Museum and the Epigraphic Museum is moving forward at pace, with new exhibition concepts, architectural upgrades and visitor-focused enhancements set to redefine one of Greece’s most important cultural institutions.

The project, covering the museum complex bounded by Patision, Tositsa, Bouboulinas and Vasileos Heraklion streets, is advancing within schedule following the approval of key museological studies.

A museum of global scope

Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni подчеркed that the transformation aims to elevate the museum into a “modern institution of global scope,” combining cutting-edge design with the world-renowned richness of ancient Greek collections.

The redevelopment is supported through a major donation agreement involving the Greek state and benefactors Spyros Latsis and Dorothy Latsis.

Internationally acclaimed firms including David Chipperfield Architects and Atelier Brückner are collaborating with Greek partners on the architectural and exhibition design.

A redesigned visitor journey

The new layout introduces a central exhibition axis, guiding visitors through the museum via key “magnet” exhibits that unify the narrative of ancient Greek history.

Immersive and flexible displays

• Open storage concepts integrated into exhibitions
• Thematic and chronological storytelling

Technology and lighting

• Subtle multimedia integration to enhance learning

The redesign places strong emphasis on physical and cognitive accessibility, ensuring all visitors can engage with the collections more easily.

Epigraphic Museum: A new experience

The Epigraphic Museum will also undergo a major transformation, featuring:

• Up to 650 inscriptions displayed across 1,400 sq.m.
• Thematic “islands” highlighting key historical periods
• A structured, guided visitor route
• Integration of research and exhibition spaces

This approach blends scholarly depth with an engaging public experience.

Exterior and structural upgrades

Beyond exhibitions, the broader project includes:

• Expansion of the building complex
• Modern infrastructure (lighting, electrical, mechanical systems)
• Structural enhancements to support new layouts

The redesign respects the historic character of the existing building while introducing a contemporary architectural identity.
