Greek Orthodox Community School of Hobsons Bay: Preserving heritage, inspiring identity

Since 1967, the Greek Orthodox Community School of Hobsons Bay has been a quiet but powerful presence in Melbourne’s western suburbs

— a place where language, culture and belonging grow side by side. From its modern, purpose-built campus in Altona North, generations of children have discovered not only how to speak Greek, but what it means to carry a living heritage into the future.

The school welcomes students from Foundation through to Year 12, in small, supportive classes that allow every child to be seen, heard and encouraged. Learning here goes far beyond textbooks. Greek language is woven together with mythology, history and cultural exploration, creating a learning experience that is as rich as it is meaningful.

Life at the Greek Orthodox Community School of Hobsons Bay is deeply experiential. Students take part in Easter workshops and Carnival celebrations, national parades and community events. They learn traditional Greek dance, engage with music, theatre and cooking, and experience Greek culture not as something distant, but as something they live and feel. Language gains rhythm. Culture gains colour. Identity begins to take shape.

Just as important is the school’s focus on emotional wellbeing, respect and anti-bullying, helping to create a safe, caring environment where children can grow with confidence. Through regular connections with the local community and senior citizens, students also learn that language is more than words — it is a bridge between generations.

At the Greek Orthodox Community School of Hobsons Bay, children don’t simply learn Greek. Through carefully designed educational experiences, they uncover their roots, connect with their ancestors, and begin to shape their own Greek identity in a way that feels natural, proud and lasting.

Classes are held every Monday from 5 to 8.30 pm at the school’s modern facilities at 272 Millers Road, Altona North, offering high-quality Greek language and cultural programs delivered by experienced educators in close partnership with the community.
