Greek Easter Draws Travellers to Sacred Sites and Traditional Destinations

From the cobblestone alleys of the Aegean islands to the cliffs of Meteora and the philharmonics of Corfu, Greek Easter remains a deeply immersive experience, blending faith, tradition, and travel. This year, many Greeks are leaving the cities, seeking destinations where Holy Week retains its authentic character and the Resurrection carries a special significance.

Regarding organised trips, Lysandros Tsillidis, president of the Federation of Hellenic Associations of Travel & Tourism Agencies (FedHATTA), described a cautious picture. Despite global uncertainties, he noted that the Easter exodus continues, with interest focused on destinations with strong religious and traditional significance.

According to Tsillidis, the market is moving slowly but steadily throughout Holy Week, with no significant fluctuations, and no cancellations reported.

Greeks are returning to familiar Easter destinations across the country, from Tinos, Nafplio, and the Tzoumerkamountains to Mani, Meteora, Zakynthos, Corfu, Syros, and Crete, choosing locations where customs and traditions remain vibrant and the solemnity of Holy Week is experienced authentically.

For international religious destinations, Greeks are avoiding Jerusalem this year due to regional instability, instead travelling to locations such as Cyprus, the Patriarchate of Alexandria, and the Sinai Peninsula, where organised religious tours continue.

Patmos: The Island of the Apocalypse

Patmos retains its symbolic significance as the “Island of the Apocalypse,” attracting visitors wishing to experience Holy Week in a deeply spiritual setting. Mayor Nikitas Tsampalakis said the island is prepared to welcome visitors from Greece and abroad, offering “the unique solemn atmosphere” of the period.

A highlight is the Holy Washing Ceremony on Maundy Thursday, a deeply symbolic ritual representing Christ’s humility and love, which draws crowds of faithful every year.

Mayor Tsampalakis emphasised that the municipal authorities have completed all preparations to ensure smooth operations, safety, and the best possible experience for visitors, combining deep religious tradition with natural beauty and authentic hospitality.

Meteora: Authentic Easter Experiences

On the mainland, Kalampaka and Meteora remain top Easter destinations. Mayor Lefteris Avramopouloshighlighted that the region, including Meteora’s imposing rock formations and surrounding villages, consistently attracts thousands of visitors from Greece and abroad.

He noted that this year the area is fully ready to welcome visitors, offering high-quality hospitality and authentic experiences throughout the region.

The combination of unique scenery and deep religious solemnity creates an ideal environment for experiencing Greek Orthodox Easter in a meaningful and emotional way. Holy Monasteries, customs, services of Holy Week, and living traditions together provide a truly unique experience.

Accommodation occupancy is already high, reaching around 80%, with further increases expected over the coming days.

Corfu: Rich Traditions and High Demand

In Corfu, another iconic Easter destination, demand remains strong. Dimitris Ambrosiadis, Public Relations Officer of the Corfu Hoteliers Association, said bookings for the Holy Week long weekend are at 85%-90%, with significant interest from both Greek and Balkan Orthodox visitors.

The island’s extensive programme of events, from Palm Sunday to Resurrection, including philharmonics, Epitaph processions, and unique Holy Saturday customs, creates an experience that goes beyond a simple getaway, offering a deeply cultural and emotional journey.

Ambrosiadis noted that many visitors focus on the peak moments, such as the Epitaphios and Resurrection service, yet the full Easter atmosphere develops throughout Holy Week. Early bookings had been strong even before Carnival season, though recent developments in the Middle East caused a temporary slowdown. Nevertheless, last-minute bookings are now rising, showing an even stronger trend than in previous years.

Air access has improved since early March, with flights resuming from London on 3 March and additional connections from Central European markets, including Poland, Switzerland, Germany, France, and Italy, with particularly strong demand from Germany.
