The Greek Theatre of Geneva Presents Kapodistrias Play

The Greek Theatre of Geneva staged the theatrical play “Ioannis Kapodistrias: Glory and Loneliness,” written by Ioanna Papandropoulou Bertou, performed by Year 5 students of the 1st Kapodistrian Primary School of Salamina on Sunday, 22 March.

The original theatrical work resulted from research and dramaturgical processing based on historical sources and was written to mark commemorative events for the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence, according to an announcement by the theatre.

The playwright, a professor at the University of Geneva and honorary doctorate recipient from the University of Patras, aimed to highlight the role of Ioannis Kapodistrias in 19th-century European diplomacy, his contribution to Swiss permanent neutrality, and his decisive involvement in the Greek struggle for independence and the subsequent establishment of the modern Greek state.

The play has already been performed nine times in Switzerland, including in Geneva, Lausanne and Fribourg, as well as six times in Greece, including Corfu, Patras and Athens.

The work has also been published in book form in Switzerland and Greece to broaden its reach. The bilingual publication, presented in Greek and French with corresponding text alignment, supports teaching the historical period, educational theatrical performances, and language learning. It has already been used in Geneva for educational purposes.

The Greek Theatre of Geneva was founded in 1994 by professional actor Giorgos Stagkakis, a student of Karolos Koun. Over its 32-year history, the theatre company has produced five tragedies, seven contemporary theatrical works, and nine poetic musical theatre performances.

Through its activities, the organisation promotes the Greek language, history, literature, and theatrical tradition, while serving as a cultural bridge connecting the Greek diaspora with Greece and its cultural heritage.
