Emanuel Comino Inspires Oakleigh Grammar Students on Parthenon Marbles & Cultural Heritage Advocacy

Melbourne, March 6, 2026 – Oakleigh Grammar welcomed a distinguished guest this week as respected Greek-Australian community leader Emanuel Comino addressed Year 12 students, delivering a powerful message on cultural heritage, stewardship, and the enduring power of advocacy.

Mr. Comino, who has devoted five decades to the campaign for the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles with Greece, shared his personal journey and lifelong commitment to cultural justice. His passion was ignited in 1976 during a visit to the Louvre in Paris, where he confronted the vast number of Greek antiquities held abroad. That experience led him to establish the world’s first dedicated committee for the return of the Parthenon Marbles—the International Organising Committee Australia for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles (IOC-A-RPM)—a pioneering effort that has since influenced advocacy efforts across Australia, the United States, South Africa, New Zealand, Europe, and Greece.

Speaking to the students, Mr. Comino highlighted the importance of historical responsibility and the role individuals can play in preserving and restoring cultural heritage. His presentation served as a compelling example of how dedication, integrity, and perseverance can drive meaningful change.

Oakleigh Grammar Principal Mark Robertson praised the visit, describing it as a rare and valuable opportunity for students to engage directly with a lifelong advocate.

“It was a privilege to host Mr. Comino and an important opportunity for our students to hear first-hand from a passionate and knowledgeable advocate for the return of the Parthenon Marbles,” Mr. Robertson said. “His presentation was stirring and an example to our students of what one person can achieve if they have dedication and drive.”
