Greek Community Schools of Melbourne: A bridge of knowledge, identity, and creativity

A new school year approaches, and the Greek Community of Melbourne’s Language & Culture Schools are preparing to be filled with voices, energy, and creativity.

“We look forward to welcoming back our students, old and new, and embarking together on a journey of learning, joy, and cultural discovery, guided by the Greek language and Greek culture,” said Maria Bakalidou, Director of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s Language & Culture Schools.

In a multicultural and multilingual society such as Australia, knowledge of the Greek language carries particular significance. It is not only a living link to roots and cultural heritage but also a valuable asset for the future — fostering critical thinking, linguistic flexibility, and pathways to strong academic and professional careers.

Reflecting on the vision of the schools, Bakalidou said that the Greek Community of Melbourne’s Schools are committed to delivering “modern, high-quality, and meaningful education that responds to the needs of learners at every age and level”.

With updated curricula, experienced and qualified educators, and student-centred, experiential teaching approaches, the schools cultivate a learning environment where knowledge is intertwined with joy, collaboration, and creativity.

The schools’ approach to Greek language education is holistic and multidimensional. Inside and outside the classroom, students engage with Greek music, dance, theatre, history, and traditions through educational programs, events, celebrations, and cultural activities that enrich their learning experience and strengthen their sense of belonging.

With nearly a century of active contribution to education, the Greek Community of Melbourne continues to invest meaningfully in the learning of younger generations. Its schools operate across eight locations in Melbourne — Alphington, Balwyn, Doncaster, Wollert, Glen Waverley, Windsor, Bentleigh, and City — offering programs that cater to a wide range of ages, needs, and interests.

“The consistently strong performance of our students in VCE Greek is a source of great pride and a clear reflection of the quality of our educational work,” said Bakalidou.

This year, 51 per cent of students achieved a study score of 35 or above in Greek, while 21% scored 40 or higher — results that do not include scaling.

The Greek Community also offers Ancient Greek classes for students, as well as online Greek courses for children and teenagers across all levels. These innovative programs, designed with modern pedagogical principles and supported by digital learning tools, are accessible Australia-wide.

Classic and Modern Greek classes for adults operate both at the Hellenic Centre and online, catering to all proficiency levels and providing participants with not just linguistic knowledge, but a rich, experiential engagement with Greek culture.

The highly successful Greek ELA (Early Language Acquisition) program, offered in Huntingdale, Mill Park, and Bulleen, provides a dynamic, interactive, and joyful introduction to Greek for children aged 18 months to 4 years. At this ideal stage for language immersion, children learn through play, creativity, and social interaction, while parents connect with one another, forming a broader school community.
