Aetolian College of Hellenic Language and Culture: Preserving language, culture and faith

Greek is an invaluable aspect of civilization and humanity. It has been spoken continuously for more than 2000 years and has played a decisive role in shaping European and global civilisation. Through Greek, the concepts of philosophy, science and democracy were born, and it has served as the foundation and source of inspiration for many modern languages.

Recognising that the Greek language is not merely a means of communication but a cornerstone of world civilisation and an intangible cultural treasure. It underscores our history, tradition and spiritual heritage, the Holy Archdiocese of Australia in Victoria proceeded in 2022 with the unification of all parish afternoon schools, establishing the Greek school known as the Aetolian College of Hellenic Language and Culture.

Natasha Spanos, Coordinator of the Aetolian College of Hellenic Language and Culture said that, “the Greek language is not simply a means of communication — it is a living link to our history, our faith and our cultural memory, especially within Australia’s multicultural society.”

The mission of the Aetolian College of Hellenic Language and Culture is the preservation and transmission of the Greek language, cultural identity and cultural heritage to future generations. Through the teaching of Greek, students connect with their roots, develop cultural awareness, and strengthen their sense of pride and continuity. At the same time, knowledge of the language reinforces the bond with the Orthodox faith and the timeless values of Hellenism within Australia’s multicultural society.

The College operates in the afternoons on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, as well as on Saturday mornings, in the following suburbs: Brunswick, Coburg, East Burwood, East Keilor, East Malvern, Noble Park North, Preston, Red Hill, Reservoir, South Melbourne, Taylors Lakes, Vermont South and Yarraville.

Classes are offered from Kindergarten through to Year 11. The teaching of the Greek language is delivered through contemporary, academically structured programs tailored to students’ age and learning needs, within a supportive, welcoming and well-equipped educational environment.

At the Aetolian College of Hellenic Language and Culture (Saint Kosmas the Aetolian), educational programs align with the core principles of the Victorian Curriculum and focus on the development of essential communication skills in both spoken and written language, as well as intercultural competencies.

In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in culturally enriched programs such as traditional dance, music, cooking, theatre and other activities, allowing them to engage meaningfully with Greek culture, Orthodox Christian values and the Orthodox faith.

The Aetolian College of Hellenic Language and Culture is staffed by specialised and experienced educators, all of whom hold relevant tertiary qualifications and academic expertise in the teaching of the Greek language. Teachers undertake regular professional development and hold the required certifications in First Aid, Anaphylaxis and Asthma Management.

Ms Spanos also notes that “families who choose Aetolian College are placing their trust in a learning environment that combines academic quality, cultural continuity and personal growth, supporting students from their first steps in Greek through to preparation for further study.”

Greek for adults – a conversation focus

The Aetolian College of Hellenic Language and Culture has for the first time the introduced Greek classes for adults.

These focus on spoken (conversational) Greek and are open to both Greek and non-Greek participants, regardless of prior knowledge. The aim is to develop practical language skills that enable participants to communicate with confidence and ease in everyday situations, while also engaging with Greek culture and traditions.

Adult classes will be offered in the following suburbs: East Malvern, Forest Hill, Northcote and South Melbourne.

The program has been designed to provide a friendly, supportive and culturally enriched learning environment, with an emphasis on experiential learning, collaboration and the enjoyment of communication. It is an ideal choice for those wishing to learn or improve their Greek for personal, family, cultural or professional reasons.
