Patras kicked off the season as the first major event, with the official opening on Saturday, January 17, 2026. The central slogan, “Get Off the Screen,” highlights the importance of in-person human contact, collective joy, and moving beyond digital isolation.

The symbolic carnival banner arrived by sea at Agios Nikolaos Pier, accompanied by sailing club boats, followed by a lively procession featuring carnivalists, volunteers, the Telalissa (traditional figure), the Carnival Queen, and the Municipal Music Band to Patras City Hall, where it remains hoisted until the finale on February 22.

Emphasis was placed on inclusion, with participation from children of KDAPmeA (centers for disabled children). Mayor greetings underscored the city’s strength in its people, youth, and children, while the KEDIP president wished for joy-filled events.

The official opening ceremony took place that evening at George I Square, featuring around 300 participants in a three-part artistic program. The costume exhibition opens on January 30, followed by the theme presentation and Carnival Queen selection on January 31. Highlights feature cantatas in the old town, the Carnival League, the Carnival Run, and Tsiknopempti (Burnt Thursday) celebrations.

This year’s theme, “What You Dream About,” connects imagination to shared experiences, building to the Grand Parade on Sunday, February 22, and fireworks on the beachfront. The official opening ceremony occurs on February 1 at Mikrasiaton Square, confirming Rethymno’s vibrant role in Crete’s carnival scene.

Chania Carnival (Souda) – Dynamic and Community-Focused
Chania’s carnival, centered in Souda, ramps up with the theme “Carnival in Motion.” The major parade is set for Sunday, February 15.

Organized with the Municipality of Chania, the Region of Crete, and local partners, it aims to boost local participation and promote extroversion across the urban area. Together with Rethymno’s events, it solidifies Crete as a premier carnival destination.

Xanthi Carnival – “RELOADED” and Rooted in Tradition
In Thrace, Xanthi’s festivities begin with the Thracian Folklore Festival on January 28. The slogan “XANTHI RELOADED – The city that never stops celebrating” signals a refreshed yet tradition-honoring revival, preserving folklore identity while energizing the event.

The program emphasizes children’s activities and builds to the grand parade on Sunday, February 22. It maintains strong cultural and touristic appeal in Northern Greece.
