Police Arrest Foreign National After Seizing Ancient Greek Spears

Greek police have seized 26 Hellenistic-era spears of significant archaeological value from the home of a 44-year-old man in Ptolemaida. The man, a foreign national, was initially arrested in Thessaloniki on January 15 for unrelated criminal offences by officers from the Northern Greece Organized Crime Unit.

Following a court-approved search of his residence, officers from the Ptolemaida Crime Investigation and Resolution Department discovered and confiscated the ancient weapons, which fall under Greece’s laws on antiquities and cultural heritage protection.

In addition to the spears, authorities recovered 22 wristwatches, five rings, and a camera, all submitted to the Organized Crime Unit for further examination. Police also found a quantity of white powder, weighing 3.58 grams, the chemical composition of which is currently under investigation.

The 44-year-old now faces formal charges for violations of Greece’s antiquities protection legislation. Authorities continue to investigate the origins and potential illicit trade connections of the seized items.
