Meteora Tops Religious Pilgrimage Destinations in Greece

Religious tourism continues to thrive in Greece, serving as a vital part of the country’s cultural and economic fabric. A new study by Emeritus Professor Serafeim Polyzos of the University of Thessaly underscores the importance of this form of tourism—especially in Thessaly, where destinations such as Meteora, Pelion, Skopelos, and Mount Olympus attract thousands of visitors every year.

Professor Polyzos’s research explores the spatial and economic dimensions of religious tourism across Greece, highlighting how regions rich in Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, cathedrals, chapels, and monasteries have become powerful magnets for both domestic and international travelers. Greece’s deep Christian heritage and its preserved monuments make it one of the world’s leading destinations for pilgrims and cultural tourists alike.

In Thessaly, the Meteora monasteries dominate as the region’s strongest attraction. Of the 24 historic monasteries, six remain active today, offering visitors not only breathtaking architecture but also an enduring connection to centuries of Orthodox tradition. Other notable sites include the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Kalambaka, dating back to the 10th or 11th century, and the historic chapels and monasteries of Trikala, Karditsa, Magnesia, and Larissa.

Each of Thessaly’s prefectures contributes to the region’s sacred landscape:

• Trikala: The Meteora monasteries, the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, and the 17th-century Chapel of the Apostles in Sarakina.

• Karditsa: The Korona Monastery (16th century), Pelekitis Monastery (17th century), and the Holy Trinity Monastery of Morphovouni.

• Magnesia: The Metropolitan Church of the Three Hierarchs in Skiathos, Evangelistria Monastery, and numerous churches in Pelion.

• Larissa: The region’s mountainous areas near Elassona and Mount Olympus, home to many Christian monuments open to visitors.

A field study conducted by the University of Thessaly gathered data from 128 visitors through bilingual questionnaires. The results reveal that 72% of visitors to Meteora are foreign tourists, while 28% are Greek. These international visitors come from diverse regions—including the USA, Australia, India, Japan, and China—illustrating Meteora’s global reach. The largest groups among them hail from Russia, Italy, Cyprus, and Romania.

Interestingly, most visitors to Meteora hold higher education degrees, with the majority being university or technical college graduates. Only a small fraction have basic education. This indicates that religious tourism in the area is strongly associated with cultural and intellectual interests rather than purely devotional motives.

Professor Polyzos notes that visitors to sites like Meteora often seek a mix of spiritual, artistic, historical, and natural experiences—similar to international landmarks such as Mont Saint-Michel in France, the Vatican, or the Baptistery of Florence. For local communities, this multidimensional appeal has clear economic benefits. Religious tourism contributes to local development, sustains small businesses, and promotes lesser-known regions.

“Religious tourism,” Professor Polyzos told the Athens–Macedonian News Agency, “is one of the alternative forms of tourism that significantly influences both national and regional growth. Greece’s abundance of religious and cultural monuments across all its regions creates favorable conditions for further expansion of this sector, supporting even the most disadvantaged areas.”

As faith, history, and heritage intertwine across Thessaly, Meteora continues to rise not just as a site of pilgrimage, but as a symbol of Greece’s enduring cultural identity and economic potential.
